Manning Pottery Guild | Manning, AB

Manning Pottery Guild Members

For nearly 50 years, members of the Manning Pottery Guild have gathered to connect and create art. Although there have been quieter periods over the decades, the guild has recently experienced a resurgence in both activity and membership.

After the pandemic, Jennifer Paulovich was looking for a new venture and mentioned to a friend she would like to create a pottery studio. To her surprise, one already existed, and she could not wait to learn more.

“My friend connected me with Sharon Paulovich [Jennifer’s husband’s cousin’s wife] who was involved with the guild, and who eventually showed me the ropes,” said Jennifer. “I made a bowl, posted it to social media and soon after interest in the guild really blew up.”

Since then, the guild set up a formal board of directors and hired Jennifer as the manager. This enabled the guild to expand their offerings, including introductory classes for those interested in exploring pottery without committing to membership right away.

“Thanks to a grant from the County of Northern Lights Recreational Board, we were able to purchase new equipment and get set up to start teaching classes,” said Jennifer.

Due to the new classes and guidance, the guild’s membership has grown. With a bit of instruction on the basics, more people are discovering a love for the craft and are finding inspiration to continue learning.

“The board and I want to see the club succeed. Pottery is so satisfying when you get the hang of it, but it can be harder than internet videos make it look,” said Jennifer. “This is why our classes make such a difference.”

The guild offers group lessons, individual private lessons and group sessions for companies looking for team building activities for their staff. The guild also offers an option to purchase a membership and learn on your own as you go.

“Pottery is an amazing outlet. I recommend everyone try it because you just never know what your mind and your hands are willing to create when they are in such a carefree space,” said Jennifer.

Several workshops are scheduled for November and December, and the guild is welcoming new members.

Options range from a one-time drop-in to a full-year membership for $160.
