Relocation Story

Meet Josée Aitken, 25. She is originally from Eyebrow, SK, and she made the move up to Manning, AB, in January 2023.

Josée is now the manager and extension coordinator for the North Peace Applied Research Association (NPARA).

What’s your story? How did you end up relocating to Northwestern Alberta?

I graduated in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science. Then, I completed a year of research in May of 2022 before returning to the family farm to work for the summer.

I was applying for jobs and NPARA was the first place to offer me a full-time, permanent position as the extension coordinator. Now, I am proud to serve as the manager.

What was your first impression of Northwestern Alberta?

Lots of trees! Coming from southern Saskatchewan, I found the boreal forest beautiful. While I had travelled to Prince Albert National Park before, I had never been this far north.

What surprised you the most about Northwestern Alberta?

Initially, I thought it would be a big change from home. However, after spending time here, I realized the strong farming community makes it feel similar to Southern Saskatchewan.

Compared to where you came from, how does Northwestern Alberta differ?

Manning is actually larger than the town I grew up in, so I was used to the small-town atmosphere. Although, the distances to larger cities are greater here, but the adjustment wasn’t too challenging.

I grew up travelling for sports. The main difference is there aren’t as many different routes to take!

In what ways have you integrated yourself into the community?

Within a week of arriving in Manning, I was playing rec hockey. That night, I was given contact information for the Manning women’s hockey team (836 Country) and joined them for a tournament. This helped me quickly make connections and friends in the area.

I also joined the slow pitch league, drop-in volleyball and women’s golf nights.

Additionally, I am a member of the volunteer fire department in Manning and the Battle River Agricultural Society. I make sure to participate in various events throughout the year whenever I can.

To top it off, I joined the Grande Prairie Women’s Rugby Club and play with them during the summer.

What would be your advice to anyone thinking of relocating here?

Be outgoing and participate in events, even if you have to go alone at first. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to community members—many people here are welcoming and helpful, which made my move much easier.

How do you entertain out-of-town guests?

I have yet to have many visitors from out of town, but my younger sister did come and visit during the summer this year.

We spent evenings driving down backroads looking for wildlife. I also took her to the North Peace Applied Research Farm to check out the crops.

What is your ideal Sunday (or day off) in Northwestern Alberta?

My ideal day off would be either spending time on an adventure with friends, enjoying sports or simply relaxing at home for a calm and peaceful day.

What are some of your favourite outdoor activities in Northwestern Alberta?

I love outdoor activities and find it hard to choose just one. Snowboarding, sledding, camping, crop tours and various adventures are all highlights for me.

In your experience, what is unique about Northwestern Alberta?

The combination of a strong farming community and breathtaking natural beauty makes Northwestern Alberta unique. The boreal forest, vast landscapes, and close-knit community create a truly special place to live and work.
